1. Fan Assembly (Axial or Centrifugal)

Purpose: Moves air through the tower to help with evaporative cooling.
Axial fans are more energy efficient; centrifugal fans provide higher pressure and are often used in enclosed or indoor systems.

2. Fill Media (or Packing)

Purpose: Increases the surface area for water-air contact to improve heat transfer.
Types: Splash fill (breaks water into droplets) and film fill (spreads water into thin films).

3. Drift Eliminators

Purpose: Capture water droplets entrained in the air stream, preventing water loss and environmental issues.

4. Water Distribution System

Includes: Nozzles, spray headers, or distribution basins.
Purpose: Distributes hot water evenly over the fill media.

5. Cold Water Basin

Purpose: Collects the cooled water at the bottom of the tower before it returns to the chiller or heat exchanger.

6. Hot Water Inlet

Purpose: Where the heated water from the building or system enters the tower.

7. Louvers

Purpose: Allow air to enter the tower while reducing splash-out and minimizing sunlight (which helps control algae).

8. Air Inlet

Purpose: Openings or grilles that let ambient air into the tower, often positioned near the base.

9. Casing and Structure

Purpose: The outer shell that holds everything together and directs airflow.

10. Gearbox and Motor

Purpose: Drive the fan system, often located at the top of mechanical draft towers.

11. Make-up Water Supply

Purpose: Replaces water lost through evaporation, drift, and blowdown.

12. Blowdown Valve

Purpose: Removes a portion of the circulating water to control concentration of dissolved solids.
